Flagship initiative

AI for Mission.

GISD's initiative to bring practical, responsible AI capacity to the nonprofit sector, starting in Virginia.

Virginia is home to tens of thousands of nonprofit organizations. Most are small, under-resourced, and running on technology that is a decade old, while the demands on them keep growing. AI for Mission exists to close that gap: we train nonprofit teams, brief nonprofit boards, connect organizations to each other, and study the sector's adoption of AI so that funders and policymakers can act on evidence.

The case

Why nonprofits, why now.

01

The gap is real.

Nonprofits deliver essential services with thin staffing and thinner technology budgets. AI can multiply a small team's capacity in fundraising, communications, operations, and reporting, but only if someone teaches it responsibly.

02

Nobody else is doing this at community scale.

AI training exists for corporations. Structured, affordable, mission-aware AI capacity building for small nonprofits barely exists.

03

A nonprofit teaching nonprofits.

GISD is itself a 501(c)(3). We build our programs on the same tools and budgets our participants have, and we share what we learn.

The programs

Six ways in for the sector.

Nonprofit AI Readiness Accelerator

A cohort program for organizations, not individuals: an executive director plus one or two staff attend together, assess their current systems, practice AI in their real workflows (fundraising, grant writing, communications, operations, program reporting), and leave with a responsible-use policy and a 12-month adoption roadmap.

AI Essentials for Nonprofit Teams

Staff-level hands-on training on the tools nonprofits already own or can get free or discounted as nonprofits, including Microsoft 365, Google for Nonprofits, Canva, and mainstream AI assistants.

Digital Foundations for Nonprofits

The pre-AI basics most small organizations are missing: cloud file structure, data hygiene, basic security, donor data handling. AI adoption fails without this layer, so we teach it first.

Executive AI Briefings

Short, focused sessions for nonprofit CEOs and boards: what AI changes for strategy, staffing, fundraising, risk, and policy, and what a board should ask management.

Virginia Nonprofit AI Network (VNAN)

A peer network of nonprofit leaders adopting AI: shared templates and policies, peer exchange, joint problem solving, and a channel into GISD's forums and research. Starting in Virginia, designed to extend regionally and globally.

State of AI in Virginia Nonprofits

An annual survey and published report on AI adoption, barriers, and outcomes across the Virginia nonprofit sector, developed with university research partners, feeding GISD's research agenda and giving funders and policymakers an evidence base.

Built to partner

Designed for partnership from day one.

AI for Mission is designed for partnership from day one. Community foundations and corporate funders can sponsor cohorts. Universities can co-lead the research. State agencies and federal funders investing in nonprofit capacity, digital inclusion, and workforce modernization will find a ready, compliant partner: GISD is SAM.gov registered (UEI MR2JANW5AE45) with an active federal-ready compliance posture.
